How To Get To Monteverde From San Jose: Best Public Transport Options

Getting from San Jose to Monteverde can be both easy or difficult, expensive or cheap, depending on how you intend to travel.

When we arrived in San Jose we'd planned to weigh up some options and, if a private taxi was affordable enough, we'd skip the public bus and save some of our limited time in Costa Rica by getting a direct route.

However, our airport cab driver quoted us $140 USA to take us there and we knew a private taxi was out of the question. We opted for the public bus the next morning.

In this article we're outlining the best ways to travel from San Jose to Monteverde, so you can get an idea of what is the best option for you based on cost and convenience.

How to get to Monteverde from San Jose

There are three main ways of getting to Monteverde from San Jose:

  • Public bus: Most affordable option.
  • Shuttle bus: A balanced option between cost and convenience.
  • Private taxi: Fastest way.

 

Public Bus

To travel from San Jose, Costa Rica to Monteverde via public bus, you can follow these steps:

  1. First, make your way to the bus station in San Jose. There are several bus stations in the city, but the most common one for travel to Monteverde is Terminal 7-10.
  2. Once at the terminal, look for the bus company called "Transportes Unidos de Alajuela" (TUASA). They have regular buses that travel from San Jose to Monteverde.
  3. Buy your bus ticket at the TUASA counter. You can pay with cash or credit card. The cost of the ticket is around $5-7 USD, depending on the season.
  4. Board the bus and enjoy the scenic journey to Monteverde. The trip takes around 4-5 hours and involves a few stops along the way.
  5. Once you arrive in Monteverde, the bus will drop you off at the central bus station in the town. From there, you will need to take a taxi or walk to your final destination.

Shuttle

To travel from San Jose to Monteverde via shuttle, you can follow these steps:

  2. Make a reservation with the shuttle company either online or by phone. You will need to provide your travel dates and the number of passengers traveling with you.
  3. On the day of your travel, the shuttle will pick you up from your hotel or a designated pickup location in San Jose.
  4. Enjoy the scenic journey to Monteverde. The shuttle will make a few stops along the way for restrooms and refreshments.
  5. Once you arrive in Monteverde, the shuttle will drop you off at your hotel or a designated location in the town.

Note: It's always a good idea to confirm the shuttle schedules and fares before your trip, as they may change depending on the season or other factors. Also, be sure to arrive at the pickup location on time, as shuttles do not wait for late passengers.
