In our experience, Koh Phangan is the easiest island in Thailand to be vegan on. This Koh Phangan vegan guide rounds up 20 vegan and vegan-friendly restaurants, organized by area, plus how to order vegan Thai food anywhere on the island.

Most of the island’s fully vegan kitchens sit in and around Sri Thanu on the west coast, with a second cluster in Thong Sala. Outside of those, almost any Thai restaurant will cook “jay” (vegan) if you know how to ask.

Koh Phangan is a small island in the Gulf of Thailand between Koh Samui and Koh Tao. It’s known for wild full moon parties and incredible beaches. But it’s also home to a thriving community of conscious expats, yogis and travelers who have turned the northwest of the island into a vegan haven.

Alongside Bali’s Canggu and Ubud, Koh Phangan has the best vegan culture we’ve come across in Asia. From raw plant-based bowls to vegan comfort food, Koh Phangan is more than just an island paradise – it’s a vegan paradise.

We’ve used Koh Phangan as a hub to live and work from, and over that time we’ve tried almost everything vegan on this island. A lot has changed since our first version of this guide – some of our old favorites have sadly closed and a wave of new places has opened. So, we’ve gone back through every listing and spilled the (pinto) beans all over again. Enjoy!

Where to Eat Vegan in Koh Phangan (By Area)

If you’re choosing where to stay based on food (no judgment, we do it too), here’s how the island breaks down.

Sri Thanu is the heart of vegan Koh Phangan. The yoga and wellness community here created the demand, and now you’ll find fully vegan cafés, juice bars and raw dessert spots within a short walk of each other. If plant-based eating is your priority, stay here.

Hin Kong & Wok Tum sit just south of Sri Thanu along the sunset road. They’re quieter, with a few standout spots like Pure Vegan Heaven, Chana Masala and Lick’s coconut ice cream van.

Thong Sala is the island’s main town and ferry pier. There are fewer dedicated vegan kitchens, but the Phantip market and the food courts have plenty of vegan stalls, and it’s the best place for grocery shopping.

Ban Tai & the south coast are a short scooter ride from Thong Sala and have a handful of good options, including The Quarter and Namaskar.

Haad Rin & the east coast are the furthest from the vegan scene. You’ll be veganizing Thai menus more often than eating at vegan restaurants here.

One thing to know before you ride over: Koh Phangan’s vegan scene is mostly a daytime scene. Many Sri Thanu cafés close in the late afternoon, so plan your dinners and check opening hours on the day.

How to Order Vegan Thai Food (And Hidden Non-Vegan Ingredients)

You won’t eat every meal at a vegan restaurant on Koh Phangan – and you shouldn’t want to. Some of the best food on the island comes from simple Thai kitchens.

The trick is learning one word: jay (เจ). It’s the Thai Buddhist way of eating, which means no meat, no seafood, no egg, no dairy and traditionally no garlic or onion. Saying “gin jay” (I eat jay) is understood almost everywhere on the island.

Don’t rely on “mangsawirat”. It’s the word for vegetarian, and it can still come with egg or fish sauce.

These are the hidden ingredients to watch out for:

  • Fish sauce (nam pla): the default seasoning in most curries, stir-fries and som tam. Say “mai sai nam pla” (no fish sauce).
  • Oyster sauce: separate from fish sauce and common in stir-fried veggies. Ask for it to be left out too.
  • Shrimp paste: hides in some curry pastes. Ask before you order.
  • Egg: turns up in fried rice and noodle dishes by default. Say “mai sai khai” (no egg).
  • Honey: watch for it in smoothie bowls, granola and “refined sugar-free” desserts at western cafés.
  • Sauces at vegetarian restaurants: at Chana Masala, for example, HappyCow reviewers warn the green sauce served with most dishes isn’t vegan, so ask for a vegan sauce.

Smartphone apps can be lifesavers here too. Make sure to check out our recommended vegan travel apps before you go.

Vegan Restaurants in Sri Thanu

Most of the island’s fully vegan kitchens sit in and around Sri Thanu, so this is where most of the list lives.

1. Eat.Co

Location: Sri Thanu · 100% vegan

Price: Mains 240–360 THB ($7–11 USD)

Eat.Co (Eat Consciously) is probably the best-known vegan restaurant in Koh Phangan, and it’s still going strong. The menu is one of the most impressive on the island – smoothie bowls, tofu scrambles, burgers, Beyond Meat, kimchi fried rice, ramen and a bunch of desserts.

The quality here is high, and so are the prices. Expect around 300 THB ($9 USD) for most bowls and mains on the current menu. You’ll leave satisfied and full, but I can’t say the same for your wallet.

Heads up: Eat.Co used to have a second brunch café in Thong Sala, but their website now only lists the Sri Thanu restaurant. It’s open daily from 8:30am to 10:30pm, which makes it one of the best vegan dinner options in Sri Thanu.

Top pick: Meaty Bowl (pan-fried “Meaty Mushrooms” with coconut mash, 300 THB / $9 USD)

2. Orion Cafe (Orion Healing Centre)

Location: Sri Thanu (beachfront) · 100% vegan

Orion Cafe serves some of the most-loved vegan food in Koh Phangan, set on a quiet bay inside the Orion Healing Centre. The whole menu is plant-based, with no dairy, eggs or refined sugar, and there’s a separate detox menu for those who are cleansing.

For those who aren’t, you’ll have a wide choice of juices, smoothies, burgers, bowls and pasta. You’ll pay western prices here, but the beachfront setting makes it worth it. They’ve also opened a new saltwater pool café on site.

Top pick: Soma Shroom Burger (fermented mushroom and bean patty in a charcoal bun)

3. Kia Ora Café [New]

Location: Sri Thanu · 100% vegan

Kia Ora is an all-vegan brunch café right in the center of Sri Thanu, and one of the highest-rated cafés in the area. Think smoothie bowls, chia pudding, porridge, house-made sourdough, vegan croissants and croffles, plus coffee from beans roasted on the island.

It’s a daytime spot (7:30am–5:30pm daily), so get here for breakfast or lunch.

Top pick: Almond croissant and a latte

4. Deli Devi

Location: Sri Thanu · 100% vegan

This café and deli in Sri Thanu is the perfect place for cheese and cake lovers. Their range of house-made cashew and nut cheeses is incredible, and they’ve been perfecting it since 2019.

Their vegan cakes ooze quality, made without refined sugar. You’ll also find savory plates, chocolate and ceremonial cacao.

You won’t be disappointed at Deli Devi, whether it’s stopping for a coffee and cake or stocking up on vegan cheese for your villa.

5. Street Vegan House [New]

Location: Sri Thanu · 100% vegan

A rare chance to get vegan Vietnamese-style food in Koh Phangan. Street Vegan House is fully vegan and gluten-free, serving street food alongside some Thai and western dishes.

It’s cash only and closed on Sundays (listed hours are 1pm–10pm), but hours have been reported as a little unreliable, so check their socials before making the trip.

6. Falafel4Flavours [New]

Location: Sri Thanu · 100% vegan

While there’s plenty of falafel on the island, this stall is 100% vegan. According to Vegan Food Quest (August 2026), Falafel4Flavours serves four different types of falafel with a range of sauces and salads.

It’s an evening stall, usually listed as open from 4pm until midnight, which makes it a lifesaver when the Sri Thanu cafés have closed for the day. Listings don’t all agree (one shows it closed on Fridays and open later on Saturdays), so check hours before you go.

7. Taboon

Location: Sri Thanu · Vegan-friendly (serves meat, fish and eggs)

Taboon is a Middle Eastern restaurant with a relaxed atmosphere just north of Sri Thanu village. It isn’t a vegan restaurant (they serve meat, fish and eggs), but vegan options are clearly marked. Don’t miss out on their tahini.

Vegan Restaurants in Hin Kong & Wok Tum

Just south of Sri Thanu along the sunset road.

8. Pure Vegan Heaven

Location: Wok Tum (garden restaurant on the Hin Kong road) & Thong Sala (air-conditioned café) · 100% vegan

Once an icon of Sri Thanu, Pure Vegan was knocked down and rebuilt on the picturesque Hin Kong sunset road. Now there are two Koh Phangan locations – the garden spot in Wok Tum and an air-conditioned café in Thong Sala (handy when the afternoon heat hits).

The menu is huge and leans into fusion. You’ll find everything from burgers, bowls, burritos and quesadillas to Thai curries. It’s one of the most recommended vegan restaurants on the island, and for good reason.

9. Chana Masala

Location: Hin Kong (next to the 7-Eleven) · Vegan-friendly (vegetarian)

This Indian restaurant is one of our longtime favorites. It’s fully vegetarian, with vegan versions of almost everything, North and South Indian dishes, and cushion seating if you want to settle in.

You can trade paneer for tofu in curries, and no visit to Phangan is complete without a dose of masala dosa. Just remember to ask for a vegan sauce, as the green sauce served with most dishes isn’t vegan.

Chana Masala has strong wifi and can also be a great place to get some work done over a vegan masala chai.

Top pick: Thali set (lunch)

Vegan Restaurants in Thong Sala, Nai Wok & the Main Road

The island’s main town has fewer dedicated vegan kitchens, but the markets, food courts and the main road towards Sri Thanu make up for it.

10. JaJa’s Vegan [New]

Location: Main road between Thong Sala and Sri Thanu · 100% vegan

If you’re craving proper Thai food, this is where to go. JaJa’s is a small, family-run jay restaurant on the main road – and it’s easy to miss, so keep your eyes peeled.

Everything is vegan, including the “eggs”, and they make their own soy milk. Expect curries, stir-fries, noodles, soups and mock meats, cooked the way you’d find them at jay restaurants on the mainland. It’s cash only and open daily from 11am to 9pm.

Prices are lower than at most of the western-style vegan cafés in Sri Thanu. Veggies Abroad (August 2026) rates its massaman curry among the best they’ve had in Thailand.

Top pick: Massaman curry

11. Colorful Hut Plant-Based Thai Kitchen [New]

Location: Nai Wok Bay (just north of Thong Sala) · 100% vegan

Colorful Hut is a 100% vegan Thai kitchen right by the water in Nai Wok Bay, attached to a small beachfront resort. That combination – fully vegan, Thai and on the beach – is hard to find in Thailand.

The menu covers Thai classics (plus a few Burmese dishes) – curries, pad thai, papaya salad, spring rolls, soups and tofu dishes. It’s also one of the more affordable beachfront meals on the island. Veggies Abroad (August 2026) put a meal for two with drinks at under $15 USD.

It’s a daytime kitchen: as of October 2026 it closes at 7pm Monday to Wednesday and Friday, and at 5pm Thursday, Saturday and Sunday. Check before you go if you’re hoping for a sunset dinner.

12. Soul Organics

Location: Phantip Market, Thong Sala · 100% vegan

This little vegan gem is tucked away at the back of the Phantip market food court. It’s an organic Thai kitchen with brown rice, a short menu and friendly staff.

You’ll find affordable Thai food here, and it’s still one of the best-value vegan meals in Thong Sala. It’s one of the only 100% vegan stalls in Phantip, so it’s a great place to start before exploring the rest of the market.

13. Pizza Luna & Tito’s Bitchin’ Burritos

Location: Phangan Food Court, Thong Sala (not the Phantip market) · Vegan-friendly

Nestled in the Phangan Food Court you’ll find these two restaurants in one. Pizza Luna cooks up sourdough pizzas from a 12-year-old starter, with homemade vegan cheese available. Tito’s makes handmade sourdough tortillas, slow-cooked vegan black beans and their own cashew nut cheese.

Tito’s is a go-to for vegan burritos. And yes, they have guac. Both are closed on Mondays.

One tip: HappyCow reviewers have flagged honey in a granola bowl here, so ask for it without.

14. Super Salad Bowl

Location: Food court in Thong Sala (listed on HappyCow as the Big A Food Court, near Home Mart) · Vegan-friendly

This little food stall is easily missable and doesn’t look like much from the outside. We’d walked past it numerous times before realizing they make great vegan bowls at a great value.

You choose a medium or large bowl and pick from a huge list of falafel, chickpeas, beans, pumpkin, potato, hummus and veggies. There are a few non-vegan items, so ask staff which sauces are vegan. Bring cash.

The food is served cold, buffet style, but if you can look past that, it’s hard to beat the value.

15. Ando Loco

Location: Thong Sala · Vegan-friendly (separate vegan menu section)

Ando Loco is a Mexican restaurant and bar with a separate vegan section on the menu, including jackfruit tacos, burritos, enchiladas and nachos with cashew sour cream.

When we tried it back in 2020, the food was a little hit and miss and our jackfruit burrito arrived as a mushroom burrito without warning. So double-check they have the vegan ingredients available when you order.

Vegan Restaurants in Ban Tai

A short scooter ride from Thong Sala on the south coast.

16. The Quarter – Creative Space Café [New]

Location: Ban Tai (near Thong Sala) · 100% vegan

The Quarter is a fully plant-based café and creative space in Ban Tai, with a more arty, coworking feel than the yoga cafés of Sri Thanu.

The menu is short and mostly western – think hummus toast, sandwiches, salads and coffee – and reviewers rave about the presentation. It’s open Monday to Saturday during the day and closed on Sundays.

If you’re a digital nomad based in the south, this is a great place to get some work done.

17. Namaskar Restaurant

Location: Ban Tai · Vegan-friendly (serves meat)

Come hungry for naan. Namaskar is an Indian-Nepali restaurant that also serves meat, but will turn its vegetarian dishes vegan on request.

The restaurant uses a traditional tandoor oven to cook up incredible – and huge – naan bread. Along with Indian classics, you’ll also find Nepali favorites like momos and dal bhat. Ask for your naan and curries without ghee or butter, and check the naan dough is dairy-free. A February 2026 HappyCow reviewer said the vegan options are well described on the menu.

Vegan Restaurants in Haad Yao

18. Taste From Heaven [New to this guide]

Location: Haad Yao (on the hill down towards the beach) · Vegan-friendly (vegetarian)

Taste From Heaven is a Thai and western vegetarian restaurant with an extensive vegan menu. It started in Chiang Mai, moved from Sri Thanu to its current Haad Yao spot in 2022, and its khao soi is a regular in vegan guides to the island.

It’s a dinner spot, open from mid-afternoon until 10pm and closed on Saturdays.

Top pick: Khao soi

19. Pura Vida Café

Location: Haad Yao (opposite the 7-Eleven) · Vegan-friendly

Pura Vida is a popular brunch spot in the center of Haad Yao. The café isn’t vegan, but there are a few labeled vegan options if you want to try out a new place. They have soy, almond and coconut milk if you’re craving a latte, too. It’s a daytime spot and closed on Sundays.

Vegan Restaurants in Chaloklum (North Coast)

20. Foods & Roots

Location: Chaloklum (beachfront, north coast) · 100% vegan

Price: Most dishes 230–490 THB ($7–14.50 USD)

Hidden away in the north of the island is Foods & Roots, a beautiful vegan restaurant that backs right onto Chaloklum beach. The setting is stunning and beachy.

I’ll be honest – when we first visited a few years back, the food was basic and over-priced for what we ordered, and we didn’t go back. But the menu has evolved since then, and recent reviews are strong (4.6 stars on Google from 650+ reviews).

It’s still not a budget-friendly vegan restaurant – the mezze platter is 410 THB ($12 USD) on the current menu. But if you’re up north, it’s well worth the trip for a fully vegan meal by the beach. Note that it’s closed on Thursdays.

Vegan Desserts & Ice Cream in Koh Phangan

Lick – Taste of Local [New]

Location: Hin Kong road · 100% vegan

Lick is a converted van in a coconut garden serving 100% vegan coconut soft serve in homemade waffle cones, with local toppings and big views over the bay. It’s a daytime spot (around 11am–6pm) and closed on Mondays – some recent reports say Sundays too, so check before you go.

Mama Noi Mango Sticky Rice [New]

Location: Main road, Sri Thanu

Yes, mango sticky rice is on sale all over Thailand. But this popular cart on Sri Thanu’s main road gets near-perfect reviews for its generous portions, and it’s open until around 9:30–10pm, so it’s the perfect after-dinner treat.

Mango sticky rice is made with coconut milk, so it’s usually vegan – just check there’s no condensed milk drizzled on top.

Don’t forget Deli Devi (above) for vegan cakes and raw desserts.

Local Thai Food You Can Veganize

Luckily, local Thai food can be veganized easily too. Tofu is widely used as a meat replacement, and coconut milk is used instead of dairy.

You can find these meals at local Thai restaurants all over the island. Just remember: say “jay”, no fish sauce, and no egg.

  • Pad pak ruam (stir-fried mixed vegetables – ask for no oyster sauce)
  • Green, red or massaman curry with tofu (ask about shrimp paste)
  • Fried rice or pineapple fried rice (ask for no egg)
  • Pad thai jay (no egg, no fish sauce)
  • Som tam jay (papaya salad without fish sauce or dried shrimp)
  • Tom kha het (coconut soup with mushrooms)
  • Khao soi (look for a jay version)

Local Vegan Snacks and Desserts

  • Coconut pancakes
  • Tropical fruit (mango, mangosteen, rambutan, dragon fruit)
  • Mango sticky rice
  • Roti (ask for no condensed milk)

Thong Sala’s Phantip market is the cheapest place to eat on the island and has more vegan options than it looks – fresh juices, spring rolls, sticky rice and a few vegetarian curry stalls.

Vegan Groceries in Koh Phangan

If you’re staying somewhere with a kitchen, Koh Phangan is one of the easiest Thai islands to shop vegan on.

  • Thong Sala supermarkets and fresh market: the best range of produce on the island. Go in the morning.
  • Terra Market Body & Soul (Sri Thanu): a health food and refill shop with vegan alternatives, nuts, seeds, spices and teas.
  • Deli Devi (Sri Thanu): for vegan cheese and chocolate to take home.

Heading to a remote beach for the day? Grab snacks in Thong Sala before you go. Here are our favorite vegan travel snacks to pack.

Closed: Koh Phangan Vegan Spots We Miss

The island’s food scene moves fast. These places from earlier versions of this guide have closed (or we couldn’t find any sign they’re still open):

  • Karma Kafe (Sri Thanu): closed in early 2026 after about 10 years
  • Tea Leaf Vegan Pizza (Sri Thanu): closed, previously Midnight Bistro
  • Vegan Phangan (Ban Tai): reported closed
  • Chana Masala’s Thong Sala mini branch: closed (the Hin Kong restaurant is still open)

Koh Phangan Vegan FAQs

Is Koh Phangan good for vegans?

Yes – it’s one of the best islands in Thailand (and Asia) for vegans. There are at least a dozen fully vegan restaurants, mostly around Sri Thanu, and local Thai food is easy to veganize.

Where is the best area to stay in Koh Phangan for vegans?

Sri Thanu. Most of the island’s fully vegan cafés and restaurants are within walking or short scooter distance. Thong Sala is a good second choice for markets and groceries.

How do you say vegan in Thai?

Say “jay” (เจ), or “gin jay” for “I eat vegan”. Avoid “mangsawirat”, which means vegetarian and may include egg or fish sauce.

Is Thai food vegan?

Not by default. Many dishes contain fish sauce, oyster sauce, shrimp paste or egg. But most can be made vegan if you ask for “jay” and say “mai sai nam pla” (no fish sauce).

Where can I get vegan dinner in Koh Phangan?

Many Sri Thanu cafés close in the afternoon, so plan ahead. Eat.Co, Chana Masala, JaJa’s Vegan, Taste From Heaven (closed Saturdays) and the Phantip market are all good evening options. Check hours on the day.

How much does vegan food cost in Koh Phangan?

Expect around 200–350 THB ($6–10.50 USD) per main at western vegan cafés, around 300 THB ($9 USD) for most mains at Eat.Co, and closer to 100 THB ($3 USD) for a simple Thai curry at local spots (prices as of October 2026).

Help Stray Animals on Koh Phangan

PACS (Phangan Animal Care for Strays) runs the island’s stray animal hospital, giving free vet care to sick and injured street dogs and cats. It’s 100% funded by donations and takes volunteer enquiries through its website, pacsthailand.com.

Before You Go

No one likes to think about it, but traveling abroad can have risks – and Koh Phangan’s roads are no exception. We recommend getting travel insurance before you go, and checking that it covers riding a scooter if you plan to.

  1. Great information! Thank you for creating this!
Not many people know of or know the name of the “Other Thongsala market”.
The market actually had a big sign on the front “Koh Phangan Food Court” but they took it town because the government excise department wanted tax money for it. But it’s still referred to as such 😀

    1. Thanks so much for your comment. It makes sense that its name is the Thong Sala Food Court.

Appreciate the insight! I will update to reflect that.

  2. Foods & Roots
Thank you for creating this guide. However I strongly disagree with your review about Foods & Roots in Chaloklum. Yes it is not what a traveller calls budget friendly, but have you even bothered to ask the owners why the prices are as they are? Vegan is not a synonym for healthy. There are many cheap vegan places on the island, but the ingredients are of poor quality as well. Thailands prices for quality food is more expensive than for factory made, full of pesticides & fungicides and unethically grown food, just like in every other country as well. Therefore I as a long term resident on the island love to treat myself with the lovely and healthy meals from Food & Roots when I go dining out.

    1. Hi Angela, I appreciate your feedback on Foods & Roots and I see where you’re coming from.

However, this was our experience, unfortunately. Perhaps we can give it another shot one time!
